- Description: On the occasion of the "Zurich Film Festival", Galerie Gmurzynska is presenting the new series by the renowned contemporary artist Richard Phillips in its gallery on Paradeplatz; the artist's first solo exhibition in Zurich for 24 years. Richard Phillips creates technically masterful portraits of celebrities nominated for major film awards in 2024, such as Cillian Murphy, Margot Robbie, Bradley Cooper and Emily Blunt. Richard Phillips' works critically examine themes such as sexuality, politics and celebrity as portrayed in the mass media. Phillips' significance for contemporary painting and culture can be seen in his solo exhibitions at the Kunsthalle Zürich, the Kunstverein Hamburg, Gagosian and White Cube, among others. His works are not only collected by museums such as the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York) and the Tate Modern (London), but he is equally known for his groundbreaking interventions such as the film premiere at the 54th Venice Biennale, an integral cameo in "Gossip Girl" and the Porsche Art Car 2023. Art critic Kat Herriman writes about the Best Picture series: "Richard Phillips presented his first celebrity portraits at the absolute height of the paparazzi era. And the press response to his star-studded exhibition opening at the White Cube gallery in London in 2010 was immense. The exhibition title "Most Wanted" illustrated the glamorous feeling of this moment and at the same time predicted its rapid decline due to the dominance of the cell phone camera, which turned us all into stars. The artist's work perfectly captured the celebrity craze of the 2000s like a frozen clip. Through forays into the real world of entertainment (such as Bravo's Work of Art: The Next Great Artist) and staged entertainment (such as the series Gossip Girl), he developed his own pop-cultural consciousness. With "Most Wanted," he attempted to answer the question that first made Phillips famous: What place does careful, elaborate painting/viewing have in a culture with an insatiable hunger for personal detail and a steady supply of stolen images?" "This year, Phillips agreed to return to this iconic series for The Wrap, the film and entertainment industry's prestigious trade magazine, to catalog the actors behind the year's most impressive cinematic performances. The new "2024 Nominees" series consists of twelve pastels and is published for the first time as a printed folio. More than a decade after the original oil paintings were created, their obsessive precision feels different. In our self-recorded age of "unposed" photography, the red carpet images seem eerily formal, perhaps even uncomfortable (a subject Phillips clearly loves to embellish). Instead of being laced with black humor, his images seem nostalgic, and that's the most unsettling thing about them. The fading of memory doesn't just soften things:"
